At its summit (1,243 m) is Kilauea Crater, a 3 km-by-5 km collapse caldera that formed, possibly over several centuries, between about 200 and 500 years ago. Radiating away from the summit caldera are two linear zones of intrusion and eruption, the east and the southwest rift zones.

This deep rift zone conduit probably varies in extent, but at times must reach all the way to the bottom of Kilauea (5000 m or 18000 ft below sea level) allowing large volumes of lava to drain on the seafloor.

Eruptive activity at the summit of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, beginning in March, 2008 and continuing to the present time is characterized by episodic explosive bursts of gas and ash from a vent within Halemaumau Pit Crater.
