Herbert List (7 October 1903 – 4 April 1975) was a German photographer, who worked for magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Life, and was associated with Magnum Photos.

Born in 1903 into a prosperous mercantile family in Hamburg, Germany, Herbert List’s work combined a love of photography with a fascination for surrealism and classicism.

Herbert List was a German photographer known for his work in photography with a focus on homoerotic male nudes, still life, portraits, ruins, broken male statuary and antiquity. His style is often associated with surrealist and fotografia metafisica movements.

Street photography, but also photoessays and portraiture are his genres. In 1953 he discovers the 35 mm camera. His work is now more spontaneous and is influenced by his Magnum colleague Henri Cartier-Bresson and the Italian Neo Realism film movement.
