The invading troops included a Sonderkommando which was led by SS officer Adolf Eichmann, who arrived in Budapest in order to supervise the deportation of the country's Jews to the Auschwitz concentration camp in occupied Poland.

There, the Germans took them to various concentration camps, especially Dachau in southern Germany and Mauthausen in northern Austria, and to Vienna, where they were employed in the construction of fortifications around the city.

Thus during a period of four months over half a million Jews were deported to Auschwitz, most of whom were murdered in the gas chambers immediately after their arrival. The ‘deposit camps’ were gradually emptied (through selections) up to October 1944.
