Ireland filed a declaration of intervention Monday in support of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The decision comes after Ireland’s November Parliament motion and December Cabinet vote affirmed its stance that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.

Ireland has become the latest country to formally join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice. Last month Israel closed its embassy in Ireland to protest after Ireland initially said it would join the case.

Under ICJ procedures, both South Africa and Israel will now have the opportunity to submit written observations regarding Ireland's intervention as prescribed by Article 83 of the Rules of Court. The court's interpretation of the Genocide Convention in this case will be legally binding on all intervening parties.
