The Federal Aviation Administration says an air traffic controller’s instructions kept an American Airlines flight from hitting mountains near Honolulu International Airport in Hawaii.

The American Airlines flight was departing from Honolulu to Los Angeles when it performed an "expedited climb."

While flying over Hawaii, an American Airlines flight just missed colliding with a mountain peak in Honolulu. Flight AA298 avoided disaster on Wednesday at around 1 a.m. local time after departing from Honolulu International Airport.
