Freeman Thomas was enslaved until he was a teenager. Thomas joined the Union Army and was assigned to the 12th U.S. Colored Infantry regiment. The home Thomas built in Franklin still stands.

He and Freeman Thomas, the designer behind iconic vehicles like the iconic Audi TT and the Volkswagen New Beetle (the one from 1997), met at the well-known and controversial Malibu Cars & Coffee.
