Authorities in the Dominican Republic say they have seized 36,000 cartridges, 23 firearms and more than two dozen rifle and pistol chargers from a Miami shipment destined for Haiti.

Dozens of firearms and more than 36,000 cartridges that were being shipped from the US to Haiti were seized by authorities in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Handguns, rifles and pistol chargers — as well as one submachine gun — were seized by the Dominican customs office as part of a shipment from Miami destined for the Haitian half of the Caribbean island.

Customs officials at the Port of Haina in the Dominican Republic seized a weapons cache hidden in a container bound for Haiti. Items seized included Glock pistols, automatic rifles and bullets. Officials say the weapons were shipped from Miami and were detected using x-ray technology.
