Democrat Sam Sutton won a special election in New York for state Senate in a district President Donald Trump won by a vast margin in the 2024 election. Sutton defeated Republican Nachman Caller, an attorney who previously ran for state Assembly.

Democrat Sam Sutton has emerged victorious in the special election to replace now-New York City Council Member Simcha Felder in state Senate District 22. Despite the district’s support for President Donald Trump the past two presidential elections, Republicans still haven’t been able to flip the heavily Orthodox Jewish seat in southern Brooklyn.

On the Democratic ticket, Chris Ferro garnered 14,890 votes, and Paul W. Minnich received 14,402 votes. On the Republican ticket, Minnich received 21,120 votes and Ferro garnered 19,734 votes. The results are unofficial.

What's next? The school board can decide to put up the same or an altered spending plan that voters would consider June 17. But they get just one more shot, according to New York law. If the plan doesn't pass again, the district would operate under a contingency spending plan that freezes the tax levy at this year's level.
