A New York jury on Wednesday convicted a former detective of lying to authorities in an effort to protect the mafia family whom he moonlighted for.

Hector Rosario, a former detective for the Nassau County police on Long Island, was also acquitted of obstruction of justice, the top charge he had faced. The jury in the case had been deliberating since Tuesday following a seven-day trial in Brooklyn federal court.

"Hector Rosario cared more about lining his pockets with Bonanno family money and protecting his own interests than his fidelity to the law," Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said.

Hector Rosario, a former Nassau County detective, was convicted Wednesday of lying to FBI agents to protect members of the Bonanno crime family and its illegal gambling parlors. Jurors found Rosario not guilty on a second charge of obstruction of justice.
