Marcelo Mayer, Boston’s No. 2 overall prospect, was promoted to the Red Sox and needed to get a ride to Fenway Park to start against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night for his major league debut.

Alex Cora said he’ll mix-and-match in the infield, meaning everything is up for grabs. Mayer will get playing time at both second and third, and if Trevor Story doesn’t soon reverse his offensive slide, Mayer could find himself as the team’s starting shortstop by the time Bregman returns.

In between games of Saturday's doubleheader with the Orioles, the Red Sox put Alex Bregman, who has a "significant injury" to his right quad, on the injured list and called up Marcelo Mayer, the No. 6 prospect in baseball and a key cog in their future.
