Many major Colorado destinations will remain open through April. Some could keep the lifts spinning for longer.

Despite several feet of packed powder, spring was in the air last weekend at Steamboat Ski Resort. As temperatures neared 40 degrees and 4 p.m. rolled around, skiers and riders descended into the base area where MTN MIX was in full swing.

As of March 3, half of the state’s ski areas have average or above average base depths. They are Arapahoe Basin, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Cooper, Copper Mountain, Echo, Eldora, Granby, Keystone, Loveland, Monarch, Steamboat and Winter Park. Vail stands at 95% of normal and Crested Butte 92%.

Just as quickly as the ski season started, the ski areas are planning their closing dates for the 2024-25 season.

A skier died on Tuesday after an apparent collision with a padded light pole at Keystone Resort. That's according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. It happened in the afternoon at the Summit County ski area located in Colorado's central mountains.

The skier has not been identified. The death was reported by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office on Monday evening, which said special operations technicians, who also serve as deputy coroners, responded to the resort at about 4 p.
