The earthquake was powerful. One of the strongest ever recorded. Unlike 2011's Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, there was little damage.

Residents and visitors in Japan were advised to remain on alert on Thursday after tsunami waves triggered by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula reached the Pacific coast the previous day.

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast on late Wednesday morning, local time. The quake triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific that hit Russia, Japan, Canada and parts of the US coast.

Millions of people were evacuated, as minds cast back to the devastating tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 in the Indian Ocean and Japan 2011, both triggered by similarly large earthquakes. But today's tsunami has been much less severe, even though it's brought some damage.
