Newly elected Dekalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson says Police Chief Mirtha Ramos has been placed on paid leave but gave no details, citing it as a personnel matter.

Outgoing DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha Ramos says she was “completely surprised" by the county's decision to part ways with her.

He showed Channel 2′s Tom Jones emails where the new county CEO, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, is now investigating the matter. “They were not doing their job,” Scott Smithwick said. He says he called the DeKalb County Police Department’s tip line to report drug activity at a home in his neighborhood near Snapfinger Road several times.

Chief Ramos became the DeKalb County Police Department chief in 2019 after more than two decades with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Florida.

Ramos was the department’s first female and longest-serving police chief in over 20 years. Police Chief Mirtha Ramos intends to resign after five years leading the DeKalb County Police Department, according to a statement from a PR firm representing her. County officials told Atlanta News First that Ramos is on administrative leave.
