Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.

A powerful earthquake off Russia’s east coast triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific, prompting alerts in Hawaii and California.

While there was no widespread damage reported in California as of Wednesday morning, the effects of the tsunami will likely be felt along the coast throughout the day, with officials warning against getting close to the ocean. In Point Reyes, the weather service recorded 2-foot-high waves over 3 hours after the first waves arrived.

California is still under a tsunami advisory after a magnitude 8.8 quake off eastern Russia. Modest tsunami waves arrived Wednesday with some damage reported to dock in Crescent City.

The National Weather Service says tsunami advisories are now lifted for most of the Northern California coast as of late Wednesday morning after the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake sent waves across the Pacific.
